Homework for the week of Oct. 8, 2007

Homework for the week of Oct. 8, 2007:

Learning new concepts is surprising to many of our students. First grade often requires a student to think and recall, figure out problems, and build upon the information that is presented in our daily instruction. You can support your child and prevent stress or confusion by reviewing his or her homework together each night

1.) Math practice counting to 100 by 1’s, 5’s, and 10’s every night. Work toward no mistakes and not needing help. The Doubles Math Facts: Our memorization of math facts has begun. Children need to be able to say (know immediately) the answer upon seeing the fact. We are currently memorizing the following facts:
0 + 0 = 0 1 + 1 = 2 2 + 2 = 4 3 + 3 = 6 4+ 4 = 8 5 + 5 = 10
6 + 6 = 12 7 + 7 = 14 8 + 8 = 16 9 + 9 =18

2.) Words of the Week: Your child will need to be able to read and spell the following words. Please help your child be ready for a spelling test on Friday.

1.) the
2.) here
3.) dog
4.) got
5.) drop
6.) drag
7.) clap
8.) cost

3.) Please complete your Reading Record. Remember to have a parent sign it each night. Return it to class on Friday

Family Focus Time:
THE PLACE GAME
Lay the same number of spoons as there are people in your family on the table. Ask your child to show you which spoon is first, second, third, and so on. Repeat with forks, knives, plates, and napkins. Now that everything is out, have your child set the table for dinner. Research has shown that children who have daily chores are more resourceful and secure. These children were also found to have higher self-esteem!

Web Site of the Week
NIEHS KIDS' PAGES
http://www.niehs.nih.gov/kids/musicchild.htm
Sponsored by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, this site provides a veritable library of kids music and lyrics online. Music enhances learning -- and reading lyrics while singing along to a favorite tune is a great way to practice and improve reading skills. When you get to the site just click on the title of the song you want to hear, and a new screen pops up with the lyrics printed out. Wait a few seconds and you will hear the instrumental music begin to play. Then you can sing along while reading the lyrics.
