Special Homework

TIME LINE OF YOUR LIFE

A time line shows the order in which things happen. You read the time line from left to right. The things that happened first are on the left.

WHAT TO DO:
1. Draw a line across a big piece of paper. A cut open paper grocery bag works well for this. You might also like using a piece of poster board.
2. Beginning with zero, mark a space on the line for each year of your life.
3. At zero, write your birth date. You may draw yourself as a baby or attach your baby photo.
4. Mark the special events in your life. When did you start school? When was your fist soccer game? How old were you when your first tooth came out? When were your little brothers and sisters born? If it is important to you, add it to your time line!
5. Add pictures, stickers, glitter, and anything else that will help your time line reflect your personality.
6. Bring your time line to school on Friday to share with our class.

Homework for the week of Oct. 8, 2007

Homework for the week of Oct. 8, 2007:

Learning new concepts is surprising to many of our students. First grade often requires a student to think and recall, figure out problems, and build upon the information that is presented in our daily instruction. You can support your child and prevent stress or confusion by reviewing his or her homework together each night

1.) Math practice counting to 100 by 1’s, 5’s, and 10’s every night. Work toward no mistakes and not needing help. The Doubles Math Facts: Our memorization of math facts has begun. Children need to be able to say (know immediately) the answer upon seeing the fact. We are currently memorizing the following facts:
0 + 0 = 0 1 + 1 = 2 2 + 2 = 4 3 + 3 = 6 4+ 4 = 8 5 + 5 = 10
6 + 6 = 12 7 + 7 = 14 8 + 8 = 16 9 + 9 =18

2.) Words of the Week: Your child will need to be able to read and spell the following words. Please help your child be ready for a spelling test on Friday.

1.) the
2.) here
3.) dog
4.) got
5.) drop
6.) drag
7.) clap
8.) cost

3.) Please complete your Reading Record. Remember to have a parent sign it each night. Return it to class on Friday

THE PLACE GAME
Lay the same number of spoons as there are people in your family on the table. Ask your child to show you which spoon is first, second, third, and so on. Repeat with forks, knives, plates, and napkins. Now that everything is out, have your child set the table for dinner. Research has shown that children who have daily chores are more resourceful and secure. These children were also found to have higher self-esteem!

Family Focus Time: 20 Questions

The game begins with one player thinking of an object. The object can be very general (a dog, for example) or very specific (a cocker spaniel, or even a particular cocker spaniel belonging to someone whom all the players know).

The other players ask yes-or-no questions to try to identify the
mystery object. Altogether the players are allowed to ask only 20 questions. "Is it bigger than a lunchbox?" might be a good first question.

Players take turns asking questions. Questions must be answered truthfully; if "yes" or "no" doesn’t' fit an answer, though, "sometimes" and "sort of" are acceptable.

The player who correctly guesses the mystery object wins the round and gets to choose the next object. If the object is not guessed
in 20 questions, the word chooser reveals the answer and gets to choose again.

Back To School Night

Back to School Night will be held the evening of September 20, 2007. Please note that there are two (2) sessions. Two sessions are offered to provide families with more than one child attending this school the chance to meet both teachers. The two sessions are identical. The first session runs from 6:00 - 6:30 p.m. and the second session runs from 6:30 -7:00 p.m. Please plan to attend one of these sessions.

Back to School Night is a time for parents and teachers to hold a meeting. As the campus is currently a construction zone and unsafe for unsupervised play, it would be wise to plan a babysitter for any child unable to sit silently for one half hour. Parents will be asked to remove children who disrupt the meeting as our time is both brief and limited.

Our meeting is general in nature and does not allow time to address the progress of individual students. Parents wishing to address private issues may arrange a meeting with Mrs. Abordo by calling the school at 277-6050.

Red, White, and Blue Day

Red, White, and Blue Day will be held on September 11th. Please remind your child to wear red, white, and blue in memory of the victims of 9/11.

Welcome

Welcome to First Grade!

Why does a first grade class need a blog? Regular classroom sites only allow parents and students read information. Blogs allow communication between parents, teachers and students. At the end of every post you will find a button which allows you, the reader, to post comments or ask questions. On a regular website a parent could check the weekly homework, note the date of Back To School Night, and view the drawing their child created in the computer lab. On a blog a parent can ask questions about the homework (and get answers by email), give input on what they hope to learn at Back To School Night, and write praises regarding their child's work. Blogs are "better" because they allow all of us to create, question, and build a better learning experience!
